Ideas for a maternity photography shoot at the beach

photography of pregnant woman on wellingtons south coast at sunset for maternity shoot

A wee while ago, I had the amazing opportunity to capture photos of the amazing Lily while she was pregnant with her twins on a maternity beach shoot!

I had photographed Lily before on a number of occasions, (including her beautiful wedding day, and her first pregnancy) so we already had a great relationship. It was such a delight to work together again to create a series of images, both with her husband and daughter as a family, and also of Lily on her own. Her solo shoot was an incredible way for me to focus entirely on capturing her and her stunning baby bump during such a special time.

We decided the best way to capture the images she wanted was to split the shoot into two.  Thankfully, as it was summer, the sun was out in full force until around 9pm! We shot the first part of the session with the family in the late afternoon. Then met up again just before sunset, making the most of my favourite time of day – golden hour!

During Lily’s first pregnancy, we had done a studio session – so this time round, she wanted to do something completely different.

She mentioned how much she loved the south coast of Wellington and how she often goes for an early morning post workout swim at Lyall Bay. Similarly, I’ve always been drawn to the wilderness of Wellington’s rugged coastline, so I was delighted that she suggested it!

Wellington’s south coast is also one of the best spots around for evening light in summer, dishing up spectacular sunsets, moody light and the dreamy, sparkling water. We may have almost missed the best light because we were too busy chatting… But we got there just in to to capture some magical shots just in time. Both Lily and I couldn’t have been more thrilled with the results!

The best part – her beautiful twin boys arrived safe and sound, less than a week later.

If you have something special in mind for capturing photos of your pregnancy, please get in touch. I absolutely adore working with people to help bring their ideas to life, especially during such a wonderful time as pregnancy!
