The importance of having family photographs taken

important extended family photograph on beach

So I’m a little bit biased when I say this – but family photography is hugely important. As you read on, know that yes, although I love booking clients at my small business to capture family photos as part of my job.  I genuinely believe it’s super important to capture images of your family together, and that you will really benefit from booking in a family photoshoot.

Life moves fast. Kids grow fast. Scarily fast. As someone who sees my clients only as their families grow and they reach huge milestones, I really get to see how fast things move more than most.

Most clients will book me in on their wedding day, and then I’ll get an excited call when they find out they’re pregnant and want to book in for a maternity shoot. Next – it’s their newborn! Then first birthday, fifth birthday and maybe every few years from then on. I am always blown away to see a big five year old walk into my studio when I still have photos on my wall from their newborn shoot!

It’s a cliche to say that they’re only young once – but it’s true! So capture photos of your little ones while they are still little. Because you can’t go back in time, no matter how much you might want to.

I’ll put my money where my mouth is and share something personal, which I don’t often do!
I recently did two family photoshoots with my own family – first with my side, and then with my husband’s side. These photos were taken less than a year ago, and things have changed so much in that time! One nephew moved away to Auckland to join the Navy. One niece moved out to begin studying at uni. The littlest ones have grown hugely and reached their own massive milestones in that time too.

The two shoots were done at completely different locations – in different parts of the country! I knew I’d be hanging these on the wall in my house together, so I wanted a similar look and feel for each. I also did a third shoot for one of my sister-in-law’s families in a third location. But kept the light and backdrop similar to give it the same feel on their wall.

Why am I telling you this, you ask? Because I can absolutely do the same for your family, wherever they live! I’m always happy to coordinate different shoots to sit beautifully together. Especially in this strange world where we’re often separated by distance and can’t always coordinate the whole family to be together all at the same time.

I worked with each part of my family the same as I would with any client –
Talking through the look and feel that they love. Helping them to choose outfits to keep things cohesive and slick both between people, groups and the locations (you can read more on the advice I give here). The only big difference is that instead of always being behind the camera, I jumped in front of the camera for a few shots too. (Thanks to my tripod, the help of a sibling, and a little bit of Photoshop magic!).

Time to check out the photos we captured. And if you’re keen to find out more about my family photography, click here, and stay up to date on what I’ve been up to here!

Ok well that is about all for me, keep scrolling to check out the photo…
