One of the first questions I get asked when someone books a maternity session (or really, any photoshoot) is: “but what do I wear?!”
And I totally get it! You want to feel beautiful, but also comfortable (and sometimes during pregnancy, it can be really damn hard to feel comfortable). Your body is constantly changing, things feel different and fit differently, and choosing an outfit for a photoshoot can feel like a huge task. And you want something that highlights your gorgeous bump and feels a little bit special.
I’m here to tell you that you can have it all - outfits that look incredible in photos and let you breathe, move and feel like yourself. And not only that, but I have a dreamy selection of outfits available in my studio for maternity shoots. So truly; I’ve got you!
Always a good idea: flowing dresses
Floaty fabrics, maxi lengths or wrap styles that skim over your bump but still show it off are always a winner! They also tend to be the comfiest dresses during pregnancy, with a flowy fit and loose, stretchy fabrics. Opting for flowing dresses in lighter colours means they catch the light so well (perfectly complimenting your pregnancy glow).
Embrace the bump: fitted dresses or tops
Show off that bump, baby! A fitted dress or top that hugs your bump can look so sweet (and be comfy and cosy, too). Knit dresses in stretchy, ribbed fabrics are stunning. Wanna show a little more skin? A cropped, fitted top with an open shirt over can be a sweet and flattering combo.
What options do you have in the studio?
I have a selection of gorgeous pieces in the studio in a range of colours and silhouettes which are always available if you’re stuck for ideas. Some of them are a little bit sexy, too, with some lacy options and dreamy robes. Whatever your vibe, whatever you’re feeling, I’m here for you.
What colours should I wear?
Soft, sweet tones like cream, blush, sage, earthy tones - they’re all timeless and keep the focus on you and your bump, and can match pretty much any setting. Black outfits can work well if they’re done right, but can hide the bump a wee bit, so generally I recommend going for something a little lighter.
What underwear should I bring?
Nude, seamless pieces are a good idea for underneath your dress, to avoid visible lines through lighter fabrics. I’d also recommend bringing a matching set of underwear and bra in black or white, particularly if you’re wanting to get some photos in a lacy robe or unbuttoned shirt, with your stunning bump on full display.
Anything else to pack?
Make sure you wear comfy shoes that are easy to slip on and off (nothing trickier that lacing complicated shoes when your belly is getting bigger!). Feel free to bring along multiple outfit options, layers or accessories you’d like to include (this could be a shawl, wrap, special jewellery or an extra shirt).
What about my partner’s / kid’s outfit?
For photos with your partner or children, keep things simple and complimentary. Tie into a neutral colour palette and match the vibe. Again, bring a few different options along with you for everyone in the shoot, as you might want to mix things up for different setups.
Generally, a nice button up white or neutral shirt is a goodie for the boys. Make it fun and get the kids dressed up in something special. Try your outfits on together before the shoot and see how you like the combo!
Still not sure?
I’ve got you! I’m always happy to guide you through the process and help you choose your outfits. Plus, take a scroll through some recent maternity shoots for a little bit of inspiration.
