Planning a Wellington wedding? If you live here, you already know you’re embracing a city filled with character and absolute gems (and if you’re not a Welly local, hopefully this blog will give you a taste of a few ways to make your wedding more Wellington!)
Yes, we’re the windy capital of Aotearoa. Yes, we really do love our coffee, and the streets often smell of the gentle aroma of roasting coffee beans. We love our Wellington quirks, and the best Wellington weddings lean right into them. The wind, the architecture, the waterfront, the local food and drink scene - why not make them a part of your story?
Embrace the wind (and maybe even the rain)
Let’s start with the obvious one: Wellington weather.
It’s the one thing you really can’t control, so there’s truly no point in stressing about it - but it can be worth embracing! Why fight it? A long flowing veil in Wellington wind (firmly attached to your head with a LOT of hair pins) means stunning, dramatic images. The wild wind sweeping the two of you up as you run down the Wellington waterfront? I mean, come on. Super romantic and very Wellington.
And if it rains? Reflections on pavement, moody skies over the harbour, and umbrellas (if they’ll stay up) shared between newlyweds. Notebook-style kisses in the rain. Splashing in puddles. Big yes from me.
The key is simple: plan options for the weather rather than fearing it. Have wedding umbrellas ready (if you’re booking with me, I already have you covered), choose shoes that can handle a little wandering, and build a bit of flexibility into your timeline for running in the rain and drying off.
Make the most of classic Wellington photo locations
Wellington is full of iconic spots that make incredible wedding backdrops. Even if your ceremony or reception is elsewhere, slipping away for a short creative session in the city is always a good idea. Some favourites of mine include:
Parliament grounds and the old government buildings
The perfect blend of heritage architecture and classic Wellington character! There are tonnes of photo spots here for any weather - so if you’re after a location that offers sheltered spots from the wind and rain, but also gorgeous gardens for sunnier days, this one’s a goodie.
The Wellington waterfront
There are so many spots around the waterfront for photos, and this is especially handy if you’ve booked a nearby venue. Views of the harbour and bays make it iconically Wellington.
Te Papa surrounds
I love Te Papa! And it’s such a great spot for photos, particularly if the weather is a little toooooo wild. The textures, open spaces, gorgeous outdoor areas and unique angles.
Mount Victoria
For couples wanting that quintessential Wellington view, you really can’t go past Mount Victoria, whether you’re keen for photos near the lookout, or you’d prefer further along the town belt.
City spots
Sometimes the most interesting photos happen in quiet laneways or outside classic Wellington cafés and buildings. The possibilities are pretty much endless around the centre of town, and the beauty of Wellington is that everything is close together, making it easy to capture a variety of looks without travelling far.
Serve local Wellington bevvies
Wellington has one of the best craft beer scenes in New Zealand (if not the world), so if you fancy a beer, why not opt for a Wellington brew? Instead of standard drink options, consider having a few locally brewed beers on tap or available at the bar. It’s a fun way to give guests a taste of the city and adds a relaxed, distinctly Wellington touch to your reception. Many couples I’ve photographed have choosen to:
Offer a small rotating tap selection
Name signature drinks after local landmarks (fun!)
Include craft beers alongside local wines and cocktails
Coffee is another Wellington classic! Round off the night with a cuppa, made with beans from one of our local roasters.
Other ways to lean into the Wellington atmosphere
Beyond specific locations or details, the best Wellington weddings tend to capture the city’s relaxed, creative energy. A wee list of some awesome ways to make things a bit more Welly:
Choose an iconic Wellington venue for your ceremony (Botanic Gardens, Te Papa, The Boat Shed, Zealandia - to name a few!)
Local food vendors or caterers (SO many gems around with incredible kai!)
Seasonal, locally sourced flowers (chat to a florist for tips on choosing in-season florals)
A live local band
Late-night coffee and treats from a favourite café
